The Whitfield-Manjiro Friendship Society celebrates the life of John Manjiro, the first Japanese person to live in the United States, who was rescued from a deserted island by a New Bedford whaleship in 1841. Manjiro’s story and the whaling heritage of the Fairhaven/Greater New Bedford area is reflected in the logo’s motif of waves and the tail of a sperm whale. The circular logo, with its surrounding text, reflects the enduring friendship between Japan and the U.S.A. that is part of Manjiro’s legacy.
