FICTION | 2012
It is 1841. An American whaleship rescues Shima and Takao, two castaway Japanese boys, from the wreck of their fishing boat in a freak typhoon. Barred from reentering Japan, the ship heads for the whaling grounds of the South Pacific. Shima becomes an unwilling passenger in a strange floating world filled with foreign faces, a new language, and a hostile chief mate. But when the reclusive captain suddenly falls ill, Shima and third mate Daniel Ellis stumble upon a secret from his past that brings together their previously isolated worlds.

FICTION | 2015
Sequel to The Sea-God at Sunrise. In 1849, during the early days of the Gold Rush, whaleship captain Daniel Ellis plans a routine port stop in Honolulu. When crisis strikes, he turns to his old friend Shima, now living just outside Honolulu and well connected within the Hawaiian elite. But Shima has changed, too, and he has his own secrets. Ellis may find that the biggest battles he’ll face are not at sea against monsters of the deep, but in the harbors and valleys of Oahu against friend and brother.

This short collection of fiction, essay, and poetry was inspired by my time living in Japan, in a country that has became my second home. From riding the bullet train in Tokyo, to the rice fields of Aomori on a spring night, to the yearly ritual of the cherry blossoms, experience my Japan through these sometimes fantastical, sometimes personal essays and short stories.

“Cosplay” – a Japanese word describing the hobby of designing and dressing up in costumes. From 2011-2013, I traveled throughout the United States, talking to cosplayers across the country about making costumes, how they got started, and why they love it. The book includes photographs and interviews from approximately 120 cosplayers from 43 different states, including Hawaii and Alaska. Through interviews and full-color photographs, these cosplayers describe in their own words how cosplay has profoundly changed them and made their world a better place.

John Manjiro, the first Japanese person to live in America, was a humble fisherman who made an incredible journey from Japan to America and back again in the 1840s. Manjiro, a craftsman, sailor, world traveller, and diplomat, eventually became the first English interpreter in Japan. More importantly, his friendship with his American foster family created a program of cultural exchange between Japan and the United States that lives on today. Spanning three continents and eight years of research, this richly illustrated book brings Manjiro’s journey to life.
